Partners release highly accurate ship positioning technology
A new low-earth-orbit (LEO) Iridium satellite-based technology, PntGuardTM, that can position ships with pinpoint accuracy has been launched by marine logistics provider Tschudi Shipping, satellite communications company NAL Research, and digital data transmission specialist, SGM Technology AS. The frequency of ‘jamming’ or ‘spoofing’ incidents – blocking or falsifying the real position of ships at sea – has soared so far this decade and has become even more prevalent recently. The disruption is being fuelled by geopolitical tensions including Russia’s continuing war in Ukraine and the expansion of the so-called dark fleet, as well as hostilities in other regions including the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Guinea, the Black Sea, the Red Sea, the Arabian Gulf, and the South China Sea....
