Power and propulsion system for cruise vessel chosen

September 2017 | Redaktion

Ritz Carlton | Multinational engineering company ABB has been chosen to provide power and propulsion systems for the first luxury cruise vessel in Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection’s fleet which is to be built by H.J. Astilleros Barreras in Spain. The 190m-long vessel, due for delivery in 2019, will have capacity for 298 passengers and has been designed to provide “a more bespoke service than larger cruise ships”, according to the company. ABB will supply two Azipod® D units in a form of propulsion which is proving increasing popular in the cruise sector, for ships both large and small. Azipod propulsion has now notched up more than 13 million running hours with an uptime of 99.8% and is approximately 10% more fuel-efficient than shaft-line systems. Meanwhile, hydrodynamic efficiency can be optimised around the stern because there are no rudders or other equipment associated with shaft-line propulsion.
