Rock dumping to cable laying
The modification and recommissioning of the 99m-long Boskalis-owned Ndeavor was recently completed by Rotterdam Offshore Group (ROG) at its facility in Waalhaven, Rotterdam. The 7,413gt multi-purpose vessel, built in 2013, has now been converted from a rock dumper into a cable layer. During its two-year deployment in rock dumping, the vessel had made continuous use of eight stone holds, each weighing 180 tonnes. These were lifted off the vessel by the floating sheerleg crane Taklift 4 , also owned by Boskalis, which has a maximum lifting capacity of 2,200 tonnes. When the stone holds had been removed, ROG then installed new cable-laying equipment which included a 200-tonne knuckle boom crane, a 15-tonne standalone crane, a 227-tonne carousel with a diameter of 18m, a trencher, hydraulic power units, control centres, boat-landings and additional equipment to guide the cable.
