Schottel scoops multi-purpose deal
Four new multi-purpose vessels planned by Leer-based Briese Schiffahrt will have controllable pitch propellers in nozzles supplied by marine propulsion specialist Schottel. The ships, for which Netherlands-based Groot Ship Design will provide design and engineering packages, will have flexible cargo arrangements and will meet the requirements of Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A. The 89.99m-long vessels will feature an open and closed top design for variable cargo purposes with a draught of 5.3m and a carrying capacity of 3,400 tonnes when open, and 6.65m and 5,000 tonnes when closed. As well as steps to optimise operation in ice and a new bow design based on the Groot Cross-Bow, Schottel ran tests to identify the best stern configuration to minimise power requirements generally. In addition to CFD calculations, experiments at the HSVA model basin included resistance, self-powering tests, ice power testing and seakeeping.
