Ship autonomy advances with new Norwegian JV

A new joint venture (JV), Massterly, established by Norway’s Wilhelmsen and Kongsberg, will take ship automation to the next stage by establishing infrastructure and services to design and operate vessels remotely, as well as setting up advanced logistics systems based on autonomous maritime operations. Land-based control centres will be set up to monitor and control autonomous ships, both in Norway and internationally. Kongsberg is a world-leading pioneer of automation at sea, developing and introducing the first dynamic positioning systems in 1977, and then 20 years later the Hugin autonomous underwater vehicle, eight of which have been used in the search for Malaysia Airlines’ missing flight MH370....
