Trials confirm success of cylinder condition monitor
Ship trials have demonstrated the sound performance of a new scuffing sensor developed by CM Technologies to identify the early signs of cylinder wear. The sensor can therefore prevent significant damage to two-stroke marine diesels, avoiding costly repairs and downtime. Trials aboard several large container ships and a two-stroke engine on a Baltic ferry proved that it is possible to measure friction in the cylinder when an engine is running. This has not been possible before. Scuffing is used to describe the extreme wear that can take place when the lubricating film between the piston rings and cylinder liner breaks down....
