MARIN improves its resources to fully understand ART performance
ANTI-ROLL TANK The roll motion of ships operating in a seaway often limits operations. These limits could be due to maximum acceleration, green water, capsize risk or just comfort, for example. Additional roll damping is therefore desired to prevent uncontrolled roll motion. Different means are available to decrease roll motion, including bilge keels, active fin stabilisers (either for forward or zero speed) and U-shaped or free surface anti-roll tanks. The following text summarises an analysis of anti-roll tanks by Michiel Gunsing, Maarten Kerkvliet and Nicolas Carette from the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN), which was presented at this year’s International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2014) in San Francisco, USA.
