Finland tipped the scales
The global maritime industry was eager to see the turnout at this year’s SMM (shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology) international trade fair. After a very busy week in early September, the upshot turned out to be surprisingly positive considering the difficulties the industry finds itself in. The majority of the 2,200 exhibitors and about 50,000 visitors agreed that the 27th SMM was the busiest ever. It sent an impressive signal that the industry is up to the challenges as companies work on solutions to navigate the demanding economic circumstances. Key topics at SMM 2016 were digitalisation and green propulsion – backed by a comprehensive conference programme, new theme routes (the Digital Route and Green Route in addition to the Security Route and Job Route) and a new hall (A5) dedicated to sustainable propulsion systems.
