Hybrid marine technology and “green” ports

July 2015 | John Haynes

HOUR OF POWER Hybrid propulsion brings significant benefits to the maritime industry: Emissions and fuel consumption can be reduced and engine life cycles extended. The “Hour of Power” is a hybrid propulsion concept enabling small vessels to run in and out of port for an hour on electric battery power. John Haynes, operations director of the UK-based specialist marine consultancy Shock Mitigation, describes the concept and explains hybrid power systems in general. Haynes is also founder of the RIB (rigid inflatable boats) & High Speed Craft Directory, which brings together specialist boats and equipment for the sub-IMO / sub-24m professional sector worldwide.
