Unlocking potential requires a safe environment
AFRICAN MARKET The offshore oil and gas industry is of paramount importance for Africa, and recent developments have triggered large investments by global oil and gas majors. Insecurity at sea, however, could be a stumbling block for economic growth. For Africa to realise its maritime potential, the seas surrounding the continent will have to be safe. This article by Dirk Siebels, PhD candidate at the Greenwich Maritime Institute in London, looks into opportunities and challenges for national governments, the maritime industry as a whole and offshore oil and gas production in particular.
