Emission monitoring could cover impact of CO2
MRV Last June the European Commission proposed reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships operating in European Union (EU) ports with a system for monitoring, reporting and verifying CO2. This regional approach has been criticised by the International Chamber of Shipping, which urges that the shipping industry implement global regulations and has brought the issue before the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Despite the high investment costs of developing regulations for mandatory reporting of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by ships trading internationally, however, significant fuel savings may be expected, writes maritime IT and communications correspondent Julie Ann Chan.
