Operating with a sense of touch

SEEGRIP At great water depths or other conditions that do not allow the employment of divers, scientists use robots like AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) or ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) as their extended eyes, ears and arms. Recently, a tool with a sense of touch was added to those that can explore offshore environments, write Peter Kampmann and Frank Kirchner from the Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Bremen.
