Hydrodynamic effects

April 2012 | Bernd Daehne, Burkard Watermann, Ulf Barkmann, Reinhard Schulze

BIOFILMS Structural roughness of a vessel’s hull may be caused either by the type of construction, service condition, poor application of anticorrosive and antifouling paints or micro- and macrofouling. In this article, the first of two parts, Bernd Daehne and Burkard Watermann from LimnoMar, the Laboratory for Aquatic Research, Hamburg, and Ulf Barkmann and Reinhard Schulze from the Ship Model Basin, Potsdam, give a comprehensive overview of the latest studies and findings on the relationship between biofouling and ship resistance.
