Ammonia-fuelled boxship design approved
AiP | Ocean Network Express (ONE), working together in a joint development project set up with partners Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY) and DNV in 2022, has been awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) for an ammonia dual-fuelled container ship of 3,500 TEU. The move comes as a result of the container carrier’s assessment of ammonia as a possible zero-emission fuel and follows its participation in a Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation-led pilot study into safe ammonia bunkering. Koshiro Wake, senior vice president of ONE’s Corporate Strategy & Sustainability Department, declared: “Ammonia is definitely one of the primary focuses of our research, as ammonia fuel has a great potential of generating lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional marine fuels....
