LR approves carbon capture and storage system
Greece’s Erma First has won approval in principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register for its carbon capture and storage system (CCS). The AiP marks an important milestone for the company and now allows it to proceed with onboard pilot testing. The CCS technology uses absorption to mix carbon dioxide exhaust gases with an amine solvent. This is then heated to produce a chemical reaction which reverses the absorption process and separates the carbon dioxide from the solvent. The carbon gas is then liquefied and stored cryogenically on board the ship, while the solvent can be used again in a circular process....
