Classification society joins Quadriga wind ship project

September 2017 | Editor

Hybrid propulsion | Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has joined the Quadriga sustainable shipping project, an initiative led by Hamburg-based Sailing Cargo to design and build a 170m-long car carrier with capacity for between 1,700 and 2,000 cars. The aim is to combine existing propulsion technologies with sustainable power from the wind to cut carbon dioxide emissions. Plans are that the hybrid-powered vessel will combine wind energy from four Dyna Rig masts and sails, a modern-day and more efficient version of a square rig, with diesel-electric engines and possibly also a battery system for peak loads. Initially, the vessel will have a service speed of 10-12 knots although this may increase to 14-16 knots as a result of further technological developments over the next few years.
