The lowest common denominator
“The world may have just missed its chance to seriously tackle shipping emissions!” This is the headline of a recent editorial in the Time Magazine commenting on the outcome of the MEPC 80 meeting in London at the beginning of July. In fact, opinions on the result of the negotiations on the now much stricter binding climate targets could not be further apart. Welcomed by international stakeholders, industry associations and the IMO itself, critics – especially from environmental and nature conservation associations as well as some scientific institutions – see the decision indeed as a missed opportunity....
