Partnership to build world’s first autonomous and zero emissions vessel

July 2017 | Editor

Yara Birkeland | The Norwegian chemical company Yara International ASA and Kongsberg, an international technology group, have entered into a partnership to create the first autonomous and emission-free vessel. Called Yara Birkeland , after Yara’s founder, the scientist and innovator Kristian Birkeland, the new vessel is said to change short-sea traffic significantly, Peter Due, project manager at Kongsberg, said recently. The vessel will be the first fully electric ballast water neutral 100-TEU container feeder. In addition to emitting zero harmful emissions (SOx, NOx, CO2 and particulates), it will improve road safety and reduce the environmental impact by removing up to 40,000 truck journeys per year in populated urban areas.
