From big data to “smart” data

July 2017 | Editor

simulation The integration of “smart” technologies in the maritime sector is rapidly gathering pace. To bring simulated data as close as possible to real-life conditions is one of the most crucial aspects, writes Lars Greitsch, managing director and head of research and innovation at Germany’s Mecklenburger Metallguss (MMG). Following the trend towards more detailed monitoring of ship operating conditions, design and calculation methods have the potential to close the gap between simplified model assumptions and real ship operation. Big data and maritime 4.0 services are increasingly evident in the operations of shipping and shipbuilding companies.
