Hybrid power module for the marine industry

July 2017 | Editor

Wärtsilä HY The technology group Wärtsilä has announced the introduction of a unique hybrid product, the Wärtsilä HY, claiming that it represents an unprecedented innovation in marine propulsion systems. By leveraging its technical strengths in both engine design and electrical and automation (E&A) systems, the company is launching a fully integrated hybrid power module combining engines, an energy storage system, and power electronics, optimised to work together through a newly developed energy management system (EMS). It is the marine sector’s first hybrid power module of this type. There is a clear trend in the marine sector towards hybrid propulsion systems which, many believe, are likely to be installed on a significant percentage of all contracted ships over the next ten years. The new EMS is the latest generation integrated control system, and has been specifically designed for this application. It creates an outstanding means of interaction with the ship’s onboard systems, Wärtsilä said.
