Supporting green shipping

July 2017 | Stefan Micallef

How far can shipping go in its quest to become truly green and ever more sustainable? Shipping is still largely powered by engines burning fossil fuels, and this presents a challenge. But every sector must do its bit to mitigate climate change and embrace sustainable and green solutions. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nation’s agency with responsibility for safety and security of shipping and prevention of pollution from ships, has taken a two-pronged approach towards supporting shipping to a green future. Firstly, regulatory – by adopting mandatory technical and operational energy efficiency measures for ships. And secondly, building capacity, emphasising capacity-building projects that lead to technology transfer and uptake by the industry.
