Careful planning required for ballast water system installations
Detailed scheduling and planning of ballast water management systems is required well in advance of drydocking and compliance dates to avoid supply issues, warned a specialist in the ballast water sector recently. Markus Ljungkvist, general manager of Project Sales at Wärtsilä Services, which markets Wärtsilä Aquarius technologies, said that in the company’s experience, a timeline for retrofit project completion requires a minimum of six to eight months. Analysis carried out by Wärtsilä indicates that about 26,000 vessels of more than 400gt will need to have ballast water treatment systems installed in the coming years, with projects and engineering service requirements likely to peak in the years between 2020 and 2024....
