Classification society issues guidelines on drone surveys

Japanese classification society ClassNK has released Guidelines for Use of Drones in Class Surveys which sets out the applicable range and procedures for the safe use of drones in surveys as well as requirements for drone service suppliers. The guidelines follow a full-scale study begun in January 2017 in which a series of experiments were undertaken to test drone operation in ships’ tanks and cargo holds. Last September, ClassNK established a R&D Roadmap which described efforts related to drones under the heading ‘Survey Technology Innovation’, one of the classification society’s four main areas of research and development....
