New DP standard

March 2017 | Editor

A new unified approach to assessing a ship’s dynamic positioning (DP) capability has been established by DNV GL. Working with nearly 20 industry stakeholders in Norway, the Netherlands and the UK, the classification society has developed the DNVGL-ST-0111 standard which it launched at the European Dynamic Positioning Conference recently in London. According to Aleks Karlsen, senior principal specialist DP Systems at DNV GL Maritime, many in the industry have been calling for a new standard that would embrace recent advances in DP technology and provide reliable data so that owners, operators and other stakeholders can benchmark and compare vessels accurately. “One of the greatest challenges in this field is to be able to compare the DP capability of different vessels,” he told delegates at the London event. DNV GL has therefore developed strict requirements, set out in Level 1 in the new standard, for the calculation methodology, enabling different vessels to be compared consistently.
