Concern mounts over European subsea infrastructure
The European Subsea Cables Association (ESCA) and the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) have warned that risks to Europe’s subsea cable infrastructure could cause severe disruption. Risks include growing geopolitical tension, the impact of climate change, and lack of preparedness. Recent incidents in the Baltic and North seas have emphasised that undersea cable damage can have direct and adverse impacts ashore. Subsea telecommunication cables, for example, handle more than 99% of global intercontinental data traffic while power cables carry increasing amounts of renewable energy and share power between different countries across the continent....
