UK well-placed to develop SMRs for merchant vessels, paper concludes

A paper assessing the feasibility of small modular reactors (SMR) for merchant vessels and floating nuclear power plants (FNPP) sited offshore has concluded that the UK’s Department for Transport should include nuclear power as one of shipping’s future sources of energy in an updated Clean Maritime Plan. The study, Advanced Maritime Nuclear: A unique opportunity for the UK, has been undertaken by floating nuclear power developer Core Power, P&I insurer North Standard, and Lloyd’s Register. Clean nuclear power could prove to be a boon for shipping, the partners argue, as the sector currently relies on fossil fuel power almost entirely....
