Day-to-day business continues despite disruption on the continent
President Donald Trump’s sudden interest in the country’s inward-focused shipbuilding industry is, of course, spurred by his current spat with President Xi of China where well over half of the world’s commercial ships are now built. But the backdrop is rather more complicated than the self-proclaimed US ‘deal-maker’ may think. In another of his seemingly off-the-cuff remarks, the President said recently: “I’m announcing tonight that we will create a new office of shipbuilding in the White House and offer special tax incentives to bring this industry home to America where it belongs....
