reduction of emissions Due to their harmful properties, NOx emissions are regulated both on land and at sea. The introduction of what is known as Best Available Technology (BAT), often also referred to as BREF (Best Available Technology Reference Paper), is currently being implemented in Europe for use on land whilst global limits for NOx emissions (IMO, Tier III) already apply to marine diesel engines in some regions and will apply to all new ships from 2021 onwards.
