UNCUse and protection of the seas
The maritime industry, termed the “blue economy”, has great potential as a major source of new jobs and growth. This has led to the magic words “blue growth”, invoked especially by the European Commission. The blue economy not only covers maritime transport including port services and shipbuilding, but also fisheries and the offshore production of oil and gas, which is expanding to water depths of 2,000m and more as well as to remote – and even ice-covered – regions. These sectors are increasingly being supplemented by other economic activities.
