LNG drives ferries and freighters

NEW FUEL TECHNOLOGIES Though gas reserves are as limited as oil deposits, development of LNG-driven vessels is making important strides not least of all due to enforcement of new environmental regulations. Until now, ships fuelled by natural gas have been mainly ferries or offshore vessels employed in sensitive regions. But naval architects today are looking for new LNG solutions to drive much bigger ships, including ultra-large container carriers, writes shipbuilding expert Ralf Witthohn in the current issue of our series “Innovative Vessels”.
