KPI and benchmarking in the shipping industry

EVALUATION Measuring performance is more important than ever today. In every industry sector, companies use key performance indicators (KPI) for periodic self-evaluation. To homogenise the use of KPI in the shipping sector and provide a comprehensive base for benchmarking across the industry, the International Trade Association for the Shipmanagement Industry (InterManager) has developed a shipping KPI standard in a joint ship management initiative. Julie Ann Chan, maritime IT and communications correspondent, has spoken to InterManager and Cyprus-based Columbia Shipmanagement, one of the first users, about the project and its merits for the shipping community.
