‘Radical retrofits’ take centre stage

Following huge hikes in fuel prices around 2010, the battle for cargo between container lines saw container ships cut their speed to save fuel and offer more favourable rates. At that time German shipping company Peter Doehle’s CEO, Jochen Doehle said unequivocally “container ships will speed up again”. A decade and a half or so later, container ships not only operate at significantly lower speeds, but many have made slow-steaming permanent. They have de-rated engines and retrofitted existing power plants so that they are effectively smaller units, and retrofitted single-fuel engines to make them into dual-fuel units....
