Slow-steaming – no quick fix says consultancy

UK-based marine engineering and design consultancy, Houlder, has warned that a strategy adopted by many operators to reduce their ships’ speeds, saving fuel and cutting emissions, may well have unexpected consequences. Since the relationship between ship speed and power is approximately cubic, it might appear initially that cutting speed makes eminently good sense in the drive to reduce emissions. Merchant ship designers and marine engineers have recommended for years that cutting ship speeds may save fuel but should not be viewed in isolation....
